Mass. Dept. of Corrections Honors Carol Peters

The June 2006 DOC Volunteer Event at the Mass. State House in Boston was both meaningful and inspirational this year. Highlights were the wise and witty Keynote speech by Sister Elaine Roulet , Chaplain at Bedford Hills Correctional Center, NY, and a musical tribute by CPO’s own music theory director, Marsha Martin. Kathleen Dennehy, Commissioner of the DOC, said, “You volunteers who work in a prison have a sense of the consequences if we do not move forward with change” as she spoke of the changes she hopes for.

But most of all, it was a joy for all the CPO people attending when Carol Peters was honored as the MCI-Concord Volunteer of the Year! The Director of Treatment from MCI expressed praise for the meaningful, consistent programming Carol has provided, investing many hours of her time, energy and enthusiasm for the rehabilitation of offenders. “Ms. Peters is a very familiar face in the DOC facilities—her desire to make a difference is genuine. She is one of the most dedicated and heartfelt individuals we have had the pleasure to work with. Carol exemplifies the spirit of volunteering.”

Carol received her Masters degree from Andover Newton in 2004. The title of her master’s thesis, “Creating Healing Environments in Prisons” certainly sums up her goal and passion in all her volunteer work.  Amazingly, over a six year period, she has offered programs in six different prisons, facilitating AVP workshops and teaching Emotional Awareness courses.

CPO is pleased and proud of your well-deserved honor, Carol—congratulations from all of us!

CPO too came in for praise:  “The CPO group has long served the Concord facilities and their dedication has not gone unnoticed by the MCI administration.”
