Although Concord Prison Outreach’s primary focus is serving the prisons in Concord, CPO is committed to encouraging volunteer programs at other prison facilities in Massachusetts.
Book Discussion Groups – CPO volunteers staff book discussion groups at Old Colony Correctional Center and Sousa Baranowski Correctional Center. CPO also offers financial support for these programs.
BEACON and other Emotional Literacy Classes – CPO has made a major effort to recruit volunteers throughout the state and train them in the Houses of Healing curriculum. Volunteers who have trained at the Concord prisons now run programs at Norfolk, South Middlesex Correctional Center, Old Colony Medium and Old Colony Minimum, Pondville and Cedar Junction. CPO will often provide seed money for the textbooks for the first year to help launch these new programs.
At the Middlesex House of Correction (MHOC), CPO has joined forces with the Middlesex County Prison Coordinating Committee (MCPCC) to strengthen volunteer-led programs. CPO volunteers are currently running a writing class and a short story discussion group. We continue to work closely with MCPCC and the administration at MHOC to develop new programs here.
